OMG! I got a KODAK EASYSHARE CX7330 3.1 MEGAPIXEL DIGITAL CAMERA off of Kijiji for $30.00 !
IT IS INCREDIBLE ! ! !
Yes it has a timer. Can do close-up's. The color is crystal clear. - Just like you're there!
It even takes movies! - Though I haven't tried that yet.
And the Pic's are FULL SCREEN pic's!
And, yes, it will mount on a tripod!
$30.00 ! ! ! lol

ps. And It's Got A Flash ! lol

If you are looking for a point-and-shoot camera, try to limit your search to Canon, Sony and Lumix. Canon has been producing cameras for a very long time and knows what to put in their cameras. Sony is a leader in electronic gadgetry and overwhelms their products with features. Lumix (by Panasonic) uses one of the best lens brands ever in photography, Leica.

Most decently priced point-and-shooters have similar features. For shooting around town, you won't be too concerned with zoom but you may need more megapixels (around 10) if you want to make large prints or do lots of cropping. Be sure to confirm that an auto timer is present and ask what special effects the camera has. B/W and Sepia are good for simulating old photos.

The stand is called a tripod and they come in every imaginable size from pocket versions to 6-foot long carbon fiber models. At most, you would need a 3-footer but that would be a hassle to carry around if you're just out for fun. My suggestion would a small Gorilla-pod that you can creatively wrap around almost anything (posts, poles, branches, etc.) instead of just standing right in front of you. It is more expensive but much more versatile than an ordinary mini tripod.

Good luck with your hunt and enjoy shooting.

Any of the Canon compact cameras should fill your needs. The Canon "Powershot" G10 is "king of the hill" in this class of camera - it will let you do a lot, including standard definition video with sound for up to one hour on 8 GB SDHC cards. I own one - its a great and powerful little camera.

One thing that you didn't mention is what style of camera you want - do you need to be able to slip it into your pocket. Canon make some excellent compact and hybrid cameras (and SLRs), by comparison Canon have far more natural skin tones in their compact cameras than many other brands. When you use a flash at night on a Canon you generally still get warm healthy skin tones, rather than the blown out shiny skin you often find with other cameras.
Panasonic are also producing some excellent cameras at this point in time.

To answer your questions...
- self timer is generally standard these days, but always best to check in store before you buy.
- Screw type tripod mounts can be found on pretty much every camera - just check on the base of the camera for a screw hole.

Good Luck!

Nowadays the price of a digital camera has dropped and the quality has increased, so are you considering buying one?

If your answer is “Yes”, then you must look at the useful suggestions ePathChina, the professional online shop, has made for you, since it is not uncommon to see people getting confused about what to look for when buying a digital camera.

ePathChina personally believes to properly address that issue, you need to answer the following questions:

- Will you ever be printing your photo in a large format paper? (such as a 8×10 paper, or even poster-size photos)

- What type of photographer are you? Are you a ‘I want to pick up a camera, press a button and shoot a photo’ type of person? Or are you a ‘The color of the picture I have just taken is wrong, is there anything I can do to fix it’ type of person? Or are you the type of photographer where all advance features have to be available in the camera?

If you never need to print in large format, then a minimum of 4 or 5 megapixel camera is enough.

If you are a person who doesn’t want complex menus in a camera, then you should buy a decent point-and-shoot camera.

If you want more advanced features but don’t want to deal with exchanging lenses, then you should go with the so-called pro-sumer camera.

If you really want a complete set of features, then digital SLR would be the camera that will fit your need nicely.

The following accessories may be needed when you purchase a digital camera:

-A decent sized memory card (e.g. SD card, compact flash, or memory stick). Personally ePathChina thinks 1GB is a minimum. When purchasing a memory card, choose the ones with a high transfer rate (such as the San Disk Ultra). This might not mean anything now, but you’ll appreciate the smooth transition between shots (there’s no pause when you have taken a picture until the next session).

-If you have plans to take picture in a place where light source might be a challenge, then you need a tripod to hold your camera steady.

-Buy a decent camera case. You have just invested a decent amount of money on your new camera, so why not protect it.

Last thing that you will probably get asked when purchasing a camera in a store would be whether or not you want to purchase the extended warranty. This is really your call. But all products from ePathChina have 1-year warranty.

Hope you will have fun researching the camera, and can make a sound decision on purchasing the camera you really need.

For more useful information you can go to epathchina's one blog named The Necessary Information Needed Before Buying a Digital Camera .

Stick with the Canon line.

Cost also buys more SPEED. If you are wanting fast shots, minimal button delay, the more you spend the faster they are. That said, $150 still buys a very good Canon camera.
